Message from the Editor-in-Chief
Article Outline
The World Health Organization (WHO) has considered Diabetes Mellitus, especially type 2, a major healthcare problem faced by all the member states. It has been anticipated that more than 300 million individuals will be affected by this disease by the year 2025. The number of people with diabetes is increasing as a result of globalization, ageing, and obesity in addition to rapid universal population growth. Different international institutes like International Diabetes Federation (IDF) have sought to raise global awareness of this disease at governmental and public level. Diabetes Mellitus has also been in focus at the level of United Nations (UNO) with its recent resolution of adopting diabetes and recognizing the urgent need to pursue multilateral efforts to promote and improve human health and provide access to treatment and healthcare education.
Diabetes Mellitus is considered to be an epidemic disease with high prevalence rate in certain regions like the Eastern Mediterranean Region as well as some Asian countries. Scientific studies have indicated a strong link of this disease with its risk factors but science is yet to understand the disease and its relation with other metabolic disorders like obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia (Metabolic Syndrome). More extensive studies at different scientific levels are required to disclose the mystery of this disease and its complications to aim at setting a real cure.
Diabetes Mellitus is one of the largest diseases that have a big share in research publications. Large research centers and scientific institutes are involved in different projects for this disease and its complications, globally. Ironically, scientific journals focusing in the field of Diabetes Mellitus are still insufficient. Thus we in the Diabetes Science International see the urgent need to launch such peer review journal that will share in collecting excellent high standard scientific papers and making them available to researchers and research institutes. The scope of this journal includes both basic and clinical research including reviews, clinical case presentations, original papers, and case reports. It will aim to contribute to better understanding of the disease and provide a reference for clinicians, researchers and other health professionals.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the members of the editorial board, contributors, the medical and paramedical community, as well as our colleagues who joined IJDM as international editorial board members. I believe that this first issue will be a giant leap towards a more insightful look at Diabetes Mellitus as a whole.
